The Newlywed’s Guide to Engagement Ring Shapes

Did you know that nearly two million couples get engaged every year?

Given this impressive number, it’s no surprise that couples like to put their own spin on engagement ring shapes. No two couples are the same, so engagement ring styles should reflect the unique personality of the pair.

If you’re one of the lucky ones getting engaged or married this year, now would be a good time to look into some different ring shapes. This goes for wedding ring cuts and engagement ring diamond cuts.

Engagement Ring Diamond Cuts

You can’t go wrong with diamond cuts for your engagement ring. Not only are they classic and timeless, but they go with everything. There are also an endless number of engagement ring styles to choose from.

First up is the princess cut. Designed and popularized in the 1980s, this square-shaped cut is both versatile and more affordable than other diamond cuts.

If you (or your fiancee) are an on-the-go kind of gal, this cut may be for you, as scrapes or other flaws aren’t as evident for this cut. However, keep in mind that it’s possible for the corners to chip off, so be careful.

Next, you may want to consider a cushion cut. As the name suggests, this style is square-shaped and round-edged, just like a pillow. You may think of it as modern and boho, but it’s actually been around since the 19th century!

Though vintage and charming, keep in mind that this kind of cut does not sparkle as much as its princess cut sister.

Lastly, take a look at the round cut. It’s generally the most expensive because of how much precision it takes to get a perfectly rounded shape. It’s also the most sparkly.

Other Wedding Ring Cuts

Diamond cuts are certainly the most popular among engagement ring styles. If you want to express your individuality, though, there’s no harm in exploring ring shapes that are a little more offbeat.

Welcome to the emerald cut. It’s one of those engagement ring shapes gaining steam in the 21st century. Unlike engagement ring diamond cuts, an emerald cut ring doesn’t make a big deal out of itself.

It’s certainly got a more subtle, if not glassy finish to it. This rectangle-shaped ring also has cropped corners and “step” facets, making it appear very dimensional.

As long as it’s got clarity, there shouldn’t be a problem with blemishes being noticeable.

Similarly, there is the baguette cut. It is rectangular, multi-faceted, and understated. For an engagement ring with both an emerald cut and a baguette cut, shop here.
